Literacy Partners connects mentors from local businesses with middle school students to share their love of reading and help students improve their reading skills. The middle grades are pivotal in the development of strong literacy skills. During this time, students shift their focus from learning to read to using reading to learn. Mentors meet weekly with sixth grade students for one hour to read together and use simple exercises to improve fluency and comprehension skills. Teachers report that students participating in the program have shown increased interest in reading and improved reading skills. Data shows strong growth for students who participate in the program. Reading fluency scores improved nearly 30% among participants.
