As part of the district’s strategic literacy initiative, Literacy Partners targets improving middle school reading skills.  Strong reading skills in grades 6 through 8 pave the way for success in high school and beyond. The program connects employers with three middle schools to focus on boosting adolescent reading.  Volunteers from local businesses read for one hour each week with sixth grade students to encourage a love of reading and help improve reading comprehension and fluency. The program is getting good reviews from educators, students and employers.   Teachers report that students participating in the program have shown increased interest in reading and improved reading skills.  Employers are pleased with the opportunity to make a difference in student achievement.
